The software that we use does much more than we will ever know. Below are a few hints and tips that may be useful, but hidden away in the software's hidden depths. Enjoy!

Microsoft Word
Microsoft Excel

[SHIFT]+[CTRL] + >
Will increase the size of fonts

Select text > right click > Format Cells > Alignment > Change text angle
Formats text to a different angle - useful for long titles

Insert > Symbol
To insert a symbol

[CTRL] + ` (key next to 1: backquote key)
Switches between formula view and normal view

Copying all screen
[Prtscrn]

Quick charts in Excel
Select data then F11

Copying active window only
[alt] + [PrtScr]

=COUNTA (x:y)
Counts to see if the cell contains anything. Will counta cell if it does contain a character or number.

Fine movement of graphics
Use arrow keys while holding down the [ctrl] key. Higher zoom levels give finer control.

Turn excel data into a pastable picture:
1. Select the cells that you want to turn into a picture
2. Press and hold the Shift key
3. Select edit from the menu
4. Select Copy Picture
5. Select the 'As shown on screen' option
6. Select the 'Picture' option
7. Select 'OK'

 

To go to the end of a document
[CRTL] + [END]

Protecting cells:
1. Select cells you DO NOT want to protect
2. Right click over the selected cells
3. Select Format Cells
4. Seleck the Locked option
5. Select OK

6. Select Tools
7. Select protection
8. Select Protect Sheet
9. Select OK

To go to the part of a document you were last working on
[SHIFT] + [F5] after you load it.
Create random numbers
=RAND()*?
Replacing the ? with a maximum random number, then press ENTER
Shrink a document to fit a page
File > Print preview > on toolbar select 'Shrink to fit' icon.

Format excel number cells as text
1. Select the cells you want to format.
2. On the Format menu, click Cells, and then click the Number tab.
3. In the Category list, click Text, and then click OK.
4. Enter the numbers in the formatted cells.

Drop Caps
1. Select character you want to turn into a drop capital
2. Slect Format
3. Select Drop cap
